Tom Tom is Bad Bad Aug 28, 2010 I was so excited to get my new Tom Tom XXL GPS because it would make my life easier. And sometimes it does. But all too frequently it sends me the long way or even worse it sends me in circles, not to my destination. The unit I have has proven to be unreliable. One of the problems is that the unit loses contact with the GPS positioning system. Apparently there are more problems with this unit than just that.
I went to the Tom Tom website to see if I could fix it. They sent me an email stating I could down load a patch to fix the corrupt data base that was likely the source of my problems. They also stated that if they didn't hear from me in 3 days they would consider the problem solved. That approach really didn't set well with me and it speaks to how they see customers. "Do this or too bad" doesn't instill a warm and fuzzy feeling. Maybe that was just semantics or a poorly worded effort on their part. That shouldn't matter so much if they solve the problem because what I wanted was a unit that works well every time I use it.
The real problem is that I followed the directions to the letter and it didn't solve the problem. The unit still sporadically sends me the long way...and now it sends me in bigger circles. That is always a bonus when you are tight on time and the unit takes you on a route that adds 30 minutes to the trip. So much for making my life easier. The unit is so unreliable I have gone back to using map quest.
I understand that product defects happen. Nothing is perfect. The difference between companies is found in how they respond to customer problems. I let Tom Tom customer service know that the patch they suggested didn't fix the problem and that I was unhappy. I didn't hear back from them. Apparently that is their definition of customer satisfaction despite the fact that I believe I responded within their 3 day deadline.
I know a lot of people have had good results with Tom Tom. I know that because the research I did prior to purchase was all good. It seemed like a safe investment. And it may be that for you.
However, check out the customer service and support prior to plunking down your hard earned money with Tom Tom. Based on my experience with them they couldn't care less about making things right. If you get a good unit and do not have problems. Great. You'll likely do well with your purchase. But what if you don't get a good unit?
My Tom Tom experience is this: If you like to gamble, buy a Tom Tom. If you want a company that will fix the problem if and when you have one, buy a unit from a different company. I can't recommend another company because I am searching for another unit right now. If Tom Tom wants to fix my unit I would be happy to update my review. What do you think the chances are of that?????
excellent and reliable starter GPS Aug 27, 2010 I bought the TomTom One 3rd Edition a little over 2 years ago. It was the 2nd gps unit I had ever used (1st was verizon's VZ Navigator). 1st impression of this unit was awesome and it took awhile before finding little faults with it... It doesn't say street names. I guess I assumed all gps units had text to speech. Not that big of a deal since the display shows the street names, and it does announce the distance to your turns. When you first turn it on it takes up to 2 minutes to acquire satellite signals, but average wait time is around 45 secs or so and seems a little long if you're ready to go. Also, (and this has only happened a total of 5 times or so) sometimes it acts like it's searching for a signal and after waiting 3 minutes or more I end up rebooting it and it finds a signal fairly quickly after that.
However, overall this little thing has served me well the last couple years and still continues to navigate me to wherever I need to go. I love how thin it is and I can remove it from my car and it fits in a shirt pocket. The lithium battery life averages 1.5 to 2 hrs, but when it's in my car it's always plugged in anyway. Plug it into your computer, via usb, and it loads TomTom Home automatically and there's a lot of free add-ons you can download, like cool voices, power-on & off screens, car icons and mapshare updates. Also, if you connect it to your computer weekly, it downloads "quick-fix" which tracks the satellites in orbit and can acquire signals within 30 secons of power-on. I've seen these on sale for 80 bucks and I highly recommend it as an excellent and reliable starter GPS.
Poor service Aug 11, 2010 I bought this device one year ago, and last week it stucked at startup screen. Solutions tomtom website provided are useless. And they refused to repair it because my device is out of warranty. Bad service.
like a blunt drill Aug 08, 2010 Basically, when you're looking for a GPS you want one that can help you when you need directions. Except for that you would need a GPS that's not a TOMTOM because a TOMTOM takes about ten minutes to find a satellite and give you directions. When you're lost and on a road where you can't stop and wait for directions, this becomes a big problem.
Today I was in the middle of Boston (I live a couple states south of Boston) and heading for my hotel after being parked for several hours. I had to spend about ten minutes driving pretty much aimlessly because the TOMTOM would not find any satellites to give me directions. In this scenario, that GPS only created more stress and problems, instead of being a relief or solution.
Use daily, and it's the easiest Aug 08, 2010 First, as with any GPS, it's not 100% accurate. I now have had several TomToms and the physical locations are a little off, but close. The manual even states "within 30 feet," which is about 3.5 car lanes across. So if I type in my physical home address, I may be 1/10 of a mile away. Not bad at all.
Also, any GPS doesn't know local conditions. Judging by speed limits and distance, my GPS tells me to take a main road to avoid traffic (using the traffic receiver); it doesn't know that it would take me 30 minutes to move 3 miles through the traffic congestion and traffic lights.
My job has me driving all day, and this TomTom One 3rd edition was my first GPS. It's the best! My dad has had Magellen and now Garmin, but TomTom is so much easier to use and personalize. After I bought this a couple years ago, I bought the RDS-TMC traffic antenna as well, and it was always well worth it.
I went on to buy a TomTom One 130 for my wife (the price was right), but it was not as quick to access satellites as the 3rd edition is. I now have my third TomTom (so that I have traffic updates at no additional charge), moved the 3rd edition to my wife's car, and sold the 130. I highly recommend this 3rd edition!
